It is day, I can’t remember what, of quarantine. While some days are filled with energy and inspiration to create new music. Others are, let’s just say, filled with an extreme urge to lay on the couch and daydream about a time where things were normal.

Oh, sweet normal. You remember that time? Late night gigs with fellow musicians, networking with people just as passionate as you, and stuffing into a home studio with no worries of staying six feet away from anybody.

With businesses starting to open up, we can slowly see some light at the end of this confusing and oftentimes suffocating tunnel. While it will still take a little while before we find ourselves at this beautiful “normal”, it is important for us to not lose our passion and motivation to create and promote our music. So, with that being said, here are Indiependency’s tips to staying motivated while staying home:

Network From Home

One thing that is unique about the current situation is that we are all in the same position. It doesn't matter if you’re the biggest act in the world, or just starting to release your first track. We are all stuck inside, working with what we got.

Lucky for us, we got the world at our fingertips. Although nothing beats a face-to-face introduction, Instagram is a close second. There are millions of musicians that share the same passion as you and are just a hashtag away.

This is what you can do. Search up a hashtag of something that relates to your music. Let’s just say #independentmusician. Scroll through the posts until you find someone who’s music you think is awesome or you share similar styles with. Leave them a comment, connect with them, share your music, and listen to theirs. There you have it, a new supporter and fresh new music for you too.

Collaborate, Collaborate, Collaborate!

Now that you have the key to finding like-minded musicians, put your creativity and skills together. If you have an idea, you can make it work. There are plenty of people out there who can help.

The other week, I got contacted by a drummer on my music profile from Bali who was trying to create a cover of Imagine by John Lennon. He was searching for a singer and found me through Instagram. He already found other musicians from Australia, Russia, and Brazil.  His idea was to put together a video and each musician would record their part to a click track. It was so motivating for me to know that other musicians are eager to work together no matter the distance.

Where there is a will, there is a way. If. you are serious about creating music as an independent artist, then you will find a way. So, get creative with your ideas and reach out to others to make them happen. By doing this, you will definitely inspire more people and maybe even create something great.

Look to the Past for Inspiration

I always get song ideas when I’m driving. I record the idea onto my phone so I remember the melody or the lyric. My phone probably has hundreds of short snippets of song ideas that I often forget are even there.

Now that we have a lot of extra time on our hands, let’s look to past ideas that were never fully developed. Let’s face it, the walls of our rooms aren’t always the most inspiring subject for new material. So, looking back on previous experiences may prove to get you out of a creative funk.

Go through past ideas and see if there is anything that hits you. You may look back and laugh at yourself, but other ideas may surprise you. Build on those and see what happens. Maybe you can create something straight from that thought or be inspired to create something totally new.
